Tiara's Tuesday Talk – Go Time!

Tiara’s Tuesday Talk – by Sara Sheibley

And away we go! Go go go!

2014week1Gotime

Where are we headed?

A VISUALISATION OF MARS CREATED FROM SPACECRAFT IMAGERY.

This is Mars, the red planet. Pretty huh?  This is also this year’s destination. Well… Our ten year destination. Last year we made it to the moon with the help of every single one of you.  Yep that’s right. Whether you ran a marathon or walked from your bed to the couch… You got us there. Of course Mars is a lot further away, BUT in the words of our fearless leader:

2014TTweek1JustDoIt

We need about 80 billion steps to get from here 2014TTweek1Moon  to Mars.  If you do 5 steps or 5,000 or 50,000 it counts. Every year we try to emphasize that this isn’t about getting the most steps or doing anything that puts your health in jeopardy. If you’re like me and you currently aren’t very mobile than the best thing to do is to start this off small. As always, when starting any exercise program, check with your physician first. Walking is an easy and good way to start an exercise program but for some of us with Ankylosing Spondylitis even walking can be difficult.

2014TTweek1Paine

Pain is the number one indicator that something is not right. Don’t ignore pain. Foot pain, hip pain, back pain can mean that something else is going on. If you develop severe pain and/or pain that will not go away after resting, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. If your pain is more typical for you, you may know how to deal with it without making a run to the doctors.
Next time we will discuss pain, its many forms and some ways to deal with the aches and pains that can and may very well come up on this walk. Remember though, every step counts. We all (most of us) get up to go potty, find food and get in and out of bed (most days). THOSE STEPS COUNT TOO!!
You don’t have to go on a planned walk. You don’t have to be walking a 5K every day. Just strap on a trusty little pedometer…

And GO GO GO! To Mars =)

Born with small fiber axonal polyneuropathy, she had aches and pains early on but wasn’t diagnosed with AS until 2008. Since then she has had to champion her own cause after she developed hemalytic anemia from treatments. Although she suffers with more than just AS, she feels that this is her primary illness and wants to be active in helping the cause. Sara & her Tiara’s Tuesday Talk will discuss a myriad of topics from assistive devices to walking help when you have other illnesses to consider.
