Tiara's Tuesday Talk – Our Daily Struggles With Exercise & Having A.S.

Tiara’s Tuesday Talk – by Sara Sheibley   This week I’m going to discuss exercise in a different manner. For most patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis exercising increaseS our mobility, flexibility and decreases pain and depressions. Many studies show this to be true however, the question is, what if we over do it? What if you set a goal but fail to meet it? Usually the side effect of this is feelings of inadequacy and depression which then increases our pain. Also, you can put yourself into a cycle of exercise, required rest, depression and then a lack of interest to restart… Read More »Tiara's Tuesday Talk – Our Daily Struggles With Exercise & Having A.S.

Grab Your Friends & Walk For A.S. Awareness Month!

Jennifer, the team captain of Going The Distance, contacted me yesterday to share with me some ideas she and her fellow team mates had about getting together to do some team walks. I loved her enthusiasm and excitement so I asked her to write a few paragraphs about her ideas and how they came about. Here is what Jennifer wrote:   “Easter Sunday I gathered with my family who are also part of my “Walk Your A.S. Off” Team.  While discussing the walk, a very innocent question was asked… “When can we do a GROUP Walk?” Seemed easy enough, but… Read More »Grab Your Friends & Walk For A.S. Awareness Month!

Tiara's Tuesday Talk – EVERY Step Matters

Tiara’s Tuesday Talk – by Sara Sheibley   Everyone compares. It’s the whole keeping up with the Joneses thing. “Hey look! The Joneses got a flower bed. I need a flower bed.” “The Joneses bought a new car. I need a new car.” Wow… Jenna (Yes I am picking this wonderful woman) had 16,521 steps yesterday. I only did 4587. I should do better. I’m letting everyone down. I… I… I… Notice what happens once the comparison materializes. We take something good about someone else and warp it into a downward spiral of self-deprecation, deeming ourselves unworthy or incapable, not good… Read More »Tiara's Tuesday Talk – EVERY Step Matters

Anything For A Good Cause – Well, Almost Anything!

Hi! I’m Abbe and I live in a VERY small town in Southeastern Iowa. I grew up here and I pretty much love it. It’s one of those nice little places where you find out from your neighbors and friends what you’ve been up to. 😉 Typically around here, and in my family, it’s “stay under the radar” and “don’t rock the boat” so I was raised to be quite reserved. If I didn’t know you, I didn’t talk to you unless I absolutely had to. You could say I was almost painfully shy. I also was not into sports… Read More »Anything For A Good Cause – Well, Almost Anything!

Step Report – First 10 Days!

We are off to an amazing start! I want to thank each and every one of you for your participation to date! We have many weeks ahead but I sure hope you can see it will be worth the effort and lots of fun along the way. We have many new things coming up to help us reach the moon! If we continue on this course we won’t quite make our goal. Let’s find ways together to get more people involved and share and educate people about spondylitis while we are at it. Last year we took a TOTAL of 63,978,087 steps!… Read More »Step Report – First 10 Days!

I Believe…

By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired. – Franz Kafka I’ve been thinking a lot about our walk & how we can share what we are doing with the world & in the process raise awareness of spondylitis. I need to share with you all what I believe so hopefully you can understand better why everyone participating is doing something really really important. AND by understanding a little bit more about why our walk was created, we can see we have these beliefs in common… Read More »I Believe…

AS Bloggers On Awareness – Blog Carnival One

We’ve asked the community of AS Bloggers to write & submit a blog post for our Blog Carnivals happening periodically over the span of our walk. This week we are sharing posts submitted about: Awareness, the good, the bad, and the ugly! Leading the way is Ricky of Endless Trax who wrote a very compelling post last year about what awareness means to him. I asked him to include the link to that post along with the post he wrote this year specifically for this carnival. Ricky asks, “Is awareness just for people who have never heard of AS? Or… Read More »AS Bloggers On Awareness – Blog Carnival One

Mission AWARENESS: Walk Ambassadors!

One of the three main goals of our walk is to broaden general awareness of Ankylosing Spondylitis & the related family of diseases. And, as you all know, sometimes this feels like a Mission Impossible. We’re going to turn that thinking on its head and make it Mission AWARENESS! With your help we will be posting “Take Action” & “Mission Awareness” posts & images and concrete actions that you can take to help us with our collective goal. With this in mind we are looking for people who want to take a special part in helping us raise the roof!… Read More »Mission AWARENESS: Walk Ambassadors!
